Dawn Schantz has more than 30 years of experience in Pennsylvania’s juvenile justice system. She began her career in 1981 as a community-based counselor at Community Commitment, Inc. She then served as a Juvenile Probation Officer in Lehigh County from 1982 to 1987 and left to work as a counselor at Community Service Foundation before taking her next position of parent to her two children. In 1993, Dawn accepted a Juvenile Probation Officer position in Northampton County. While there, Dawn also provided extensive training at both the state and local levels around activities within the Pennsylvania Juvenile Justice System Enhancement Strategy.
Dawn retired from juvenile probation in April 2015 to accept the position of Pennsylvania’s Motivational Interviewing Consultant. In this role, she is responsible for overseeing the design, organization, and coordination of the implementation of motivational interviewing practice in local jurisdictions across the Commonwealth, with special attention to implementation steps and sustainability planning. In August 2015, she also joined the training team of The Carey Group (TCG), a national consulting firm that provides training and technical assistance for justice and correctional professionals and community groups.
Dawn holds both a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Moravian College and a master’s degree in Restorative Practices and Youth Counseling from the International Institute for Restorative Practices (IIRP).
